Kura Sushi is introducing its premium sushi brand Mutenkura in Shinjuku, Tokyo, for the first time with its largest store to date. The new location opens on July 9, 2026, offering fresh local fish from Hokkaido and unique pairings of sushi with Japanese tea.
Since Mutenkura is a smaller-scale, upscale concept different from regular Kura Sushi outlets, limited runs and special menu items often sell out quickly, especially on weekends. Planning your visit accordingly is recommended.
To celebrate the Shinjuku opening, select items like large-cut organic yellowtail and bigeye tuna will be available at a special price of ¥150 per plate from July 9 to 18. Additionally, the premium Mediterranean bluefin tuna otoro will be offered at ¥380 on July 9 and 10 across all Kura Sushi stores including Mutenkura.

The Mutenkura brand, launched in 2005 and mainly active in the Kansai region, offers a refined dining experience with carefully prepared dishes and high-quality ingredients in a calm, elegant setting. The Shinjuku store is the brand’s second in Tokyo and its largest overall.

The interior is designed as a “hidden retreat for adults,” inspired by traditional Japanese storehouses, with subdued lighting and tasteful decor to create a relaxing atmosphere. Unlike typical Kura Sushi locations, amusement features like “Bikkura Pon!” are minimized to maintain a sophisticated ambiance where guests can enjoy sushi, side dishes, and drinks at leisure.
New menu highlights include a variety of fresh Hokkaido seafood such as Hakodate salmon, large snow crab, and seasonal fish like hakkaku and kurosoui, available daily or on select days depending on catch conditions. The restaurant also continues its use of the Hokuriku Shinkansen for fresh fish deliveries, supplementing supply with Hokkaido seafood during off-seasons.
Another unique feature is the industry-first pairing of sushi with Japanese teas selected by tea master Kenta Ikeda, who holds the highest certification in tea appraisal. Different teas are matched to enhance the flavors of specific sushi toppings, such as strong-roasted sencha with sardines and tuna, roasted gyokuro hojicha with eel and conger eel, and gyokuro with fatty tuna and sea urchin.
