Starbucks Japan has introduced a new coffee bean blend named “Sumatra Masa Depan” to mark its 30th anniversary in the country. This special blend will be available starting July 22, 2026.
For those exploring coffee options in Japan, Starbucks offers a variety of formats to enjoy this blend, including whole beans, ground coffee, and single-serve drip packs, making it easy to fit into any coffee routine.
About the Coffee and Brand

Developed through collaboration between Starbucks’ Seattle and Japan coffee teams, “Sumatra Masa Depan” reflects the voices of Starbucks partners (employees) gathered through a 2024 survey focused on the “future of coffee.” The name “Masa Depan” means “future” in Indonesian, honoring the coffee’s origin from Sumatra Island, Indonesia, a key region for Starbucks since its founding.

The blend features two types of Sumatra coffee beans roasted with a challenging blonde roast technique at the Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Tokyo to highlight bright and fruity aromas. The taste offers rich umami notes reminiscent of green tea, followed by tropical flavors and a lasting sweetness. This coffee also celebrates the new generation of producers involved in its cultivation.
